The functionality provided within SquareOne can be operated locally through two separate applications - SquareOne OS Recovery and SquareOne OS Management.
Either of these applications can be used to undertake OS image management, and it is also possible to use them in combination, performing different operations in either application. The choice of tool will depend on the context and the system that is in place, but in general, the SquareOne OS Management application is recommended unless:
- An existing Windows installation is not present
- The use of a recovery partition is not practical/possible
SquareOne OS Recovery
The SquareOne OS Recovery application is useful in two separate situations:
- Bootable USB Stick (SquareOne OS Recovery USB Stick): Firstly, as a portable technician’s USB stick which can be used without installing any software on a system.
- Recovery Partition (SquareOne OS Recovery Partition): Secondly, when installed in a Recovery Partition as an additional boot option for technician or end-users to allow known-good versions of Windows to be restore (See Recovery Partition).
It runs in a lightweight version of Windows known as WinPE/RE and doesn’t require Windows to be installed and running on the system. The setup and use of this is covered in SquareOne OS Recovery.
SquareOne OS Management
The SquareOne OS Management application runs in Windows and offers an easy-to-use interface to the provided functionality. This can also be run from a USB stick without needing to be installed.
The setup and use of this is covered in SquareOne OS Management.
